Playing Chess With A Bow And Arrows Meaningful No

Playing Chess With a Bow and Arrows: Meaningful No-competition Marketing Campaigns Final part of the MindValley Reunion = Mind Blown series It has taken until November to cover all of the mind blowing teachings imparted to me in August at the MindValley Reunion in San Diego. While it’s hard to say that they saved the best for last, because I had many favorites throughout the weekend, the last outside speaker was rated highest among their speakers, and it was very easy to see why. I had known Eric Edmeades as the “WildFit” guy. Wildfit is a nutritional program published by MindValley that has produced very impressive results. He wasn’t there to speak about WildFit, however, and it appears that is just one of many programs, businesses, and successes from which he could provide us with valuable lessons. He went through a list of possible topics, all of which appealed to me. What he chose was inception marketing. What is inception marketing? If you consider yourself part of a tribe, than you have been incepted. If you are on any mailing lists, you have been incepted. First let’s talk about what inception marketing isn’t: it isn’t tactical or transactional. It isn’t competing for people who are searching for what you sell. It isn’t guessing what will make your prospect buy. It’s not about modeling your competition. If you are a job seeker reading this, you might be wondering how this applies to you. Firstly, I ALWAYS assume when learning something about marketing that there is an application for job seekers. That being said, not all methods are appropriate for all job seekers. Branding is the exception, in the 11 years that I have been advising and interviewing job seekers, all have or would have benefited from branding. In this particular case, inception marketing is applicable to those actively or passively seeking an opportunity to increase their influence and impact, the byproduct of which is faster career growth and greater income. Back to what inception marketing is: It is defining your target, understanding deeply what is important to them, identifying what they are thinking about, strategizing ahead of time the steps and stories that are going to create attraction, and providing them with engaging content that subtly moves them to realize and decide that they want and need your product. This is about asking (a la Ryan Levesque’s ASK method) and listening. It’s about nudging and nurturing. It is about appealing to your audience’s emotional reasons for wanting, and their logical reasons for feeling good about that (because sometimes we feel better justifying that in which we invest.) Then, they naturally sell for you. If traditional marketing is darts, where you try to hit one little target, this is chess. Before I share with you the steps, let me share with you the example that he gave, which demonstrated why he is such an in-demand speaker. Eric has had some enviable adventures, which give him a wide variety of intriguing experience from which he can compose compelling stories. The adventure he shared was hunting with an indigenous African tribe. This particular story took place during a second stay he had in their village, and it seemed the tribesmen were even more accepting of Eric as one of their own because he was able to hit the target on the first try with one of their bow and arrows. The pressure of these bow and arrows is much higher than one you might find at a sporting goods store here in the US. He showed us pictures of their more senior tribesmen, who you could definitely not identity as more senior based on their fitness, because they were ripped! After hitting the target they invited Eric to go hunting with them, which he did a couple times. The second time it was an all-day event. Eric had been an avid runner until some time in his thirties when he had a knee injury. But these men were running…long distances…bow and arrow in hand…without making any sounds. This was something he noticed as he was struggling to keep up, his knee giving him pain. They were not running the same way as him. While he was putting his whole foot down, making a ruckus and probably scaring game away, he noticed the tribesmen were only using the front pads of their feet, and they seemed to spring off of them rather than stride. So, he started mimicking them, and he found that, not only was he now running without noise, he was running without knee pain. He was better able to keep up. He went home and considered taking up running again, but this time he was also considering something he never thought he would â€" buying a pair of those feet shoes. You know the ones â€" they look like feet. Prior to starting this story, Eric demonstrated how at any given time, 3% of the population is actively seeking and shopping for something. He asked us to raise our hand if we were currently looking to buy a new phone, renovate our kitchen, looking to book a cruise, and buy running shoes. Time after time the number of hands raised represented roughly 3% of the room. After that story, however, he asked how much of the room was now considering buying the feet shoes. Much more of us raised our hand â€" me included, and I totally made fun of my husband for buying those shoes. He even got a few bucks from the class action suit against the company for false advertising the health benefits. At first, from a time and money perspective, it sounds very appealing to think that marketing doesn’t have to look like guessing about SEO, bidding on keywords, worrying about rankings, etc. What you have to realize, however, is that the steps involved in a successful inception marketing campaign require quite a bit of legwork, and then, once you have incepted prospects, you have to continually keep them incepted by providing value and advice. This is not the easier way, so to speak, but it is a more meaningful way to build a customer base, and over time you will have less selling to do in order to increase your reach and continually grow your customer base. It is a long-term strategy. This is where job seekers who seek to increase their influence and impact for greater career growth and income can apply this method: Start to notice where there are events in your life and at your job where a need for you is created. Tell the stories using the platforms available to you â€" LinkedIn posts/status updates, corporate wikis, industry publications, on stage at conferences, in a book, etc. In the career management course that I teach at Drexel University’s LeBow College of Business, we share various kinds of stories with our students and introduce how they can frame a story in a compelling way wherein the story actually becomes their proof of unique value. Here are some of them: Wouldn’t it be great if you knew which kind of story appealed most to your audience, which would be the employer if you are a job seeker. But NOTE: one of the first steps is to really be intimately familiar with what drives your audience to take action. Here are the steps of inception marketing: Eric certainly offered us some very pragmatic content, and he did so with humor and humility. Considering that since language existed, storytelling has been how human beings teach, it seems logical to expect that it will never go out of vogue. The media we used to tell these stories will evolve, certainly. If you need help understanding your audience and telling your story, well that is our specialty. We LOVE to help corporate influencers influence, because that is how meaningful change occurs.   What kind of action would you like your audience to take? Is Your Resume Holding You Back -

Is Your Resume Holding You Back - In the event that youve been searching for an occupation for some time, and you realize that you are qualified, yet nobody is approaching (any of your telephones!) What would it be a good idea for you to do? I address potential customers who fit this classification normally. Customers propose numerous potential substitutes with respect to why the telephone isnt ringing: Age segregation. My experience doesnt precisely coordinate their needs. Nobody will allow me to substantiate myself. Im attempting to change from non-benefit to for-benefit and they just dont need me. They take a gander at my past industry and oppress me since they dont like (fill in the clear). I could never tell potential customers that these variables have NOTHING to do with their chase or that it is anything but difficult to defeat these potential barriers. In any case, when I survey resumes from these activity searchers, I for the most part distinguish lethal resume blemishes that have nothing to do with age, understanding or industry. Ordinarily, it is obvious to me that these activity searchers are moving toward their pursuits with resumes that are doing them more damage than anything else. A few models: Age Discrimination. Numerous resumes seem antiquated and obsolete. They incorporate data that isnt vital, (for example, date of birth), butâ â omit key resume subtleties, (for example, dates of work). In the event that the activity searcher is experienced (perused: more established), an obsolete looking resume just puts a spotlight onâ a factor that may be viewed as a disadvantage. Absence of experience. Occupation searchers who dont have direct involvement with their field of decision commit errors when they dont endeavor to address the required aptitudes and adhere to an essential this is the stuff I resumed. Posting stuff isnt going to cut it when youre going after an occupation. Concentrate on those transferable aptitudes. Take a gander at your delicate aptitudes. Make sense of what you bring to the table and feature it for the peruser. Progressing. Consider how you portray your past encounters. In the event that you are moving to a revenue driven, use language that interests to that employer. Always compose for your objective. I as of late worked with a customer to re-compose a non-benefit sounding set of working responsibilities utilizing revenue driven language. She handled an interviewâ within 24 hours of sending the resume.  If you are going after a position in France, youd compose your resume in French. So also, make certain to utilize dialect and portrayals that will sound good to the peruser. Dont anticipate that them should decipher it! Industry Discrimination. Ive worked withâ clients who accept their present industry isnt a benefit in moving to another field. For instance, a chiropractor who needs to work in bookkeeping. It is anything but difficult to compose a resume that makes bookkeeping abilities and experience the principal thing managers will peruse. Ive seen numerous resumes of occupation trackers who feature the very data they think brings down their appointment! Thus, if your telephone isnt ringing, dont begin appointing fault and hurling your handsâ until you take a decent, long gander at your resume. You might be shocked at what you DO control in your pursuit of employment. After the gatherings, its chance to quit fooling around about your vocation plan. Here are some fast tips to kick you off. To begin with, get explicit about your objectives. Pause for a minute to consider what your objectives are â€" and not simply as far as salary. You'll be in front of most youthful occupation searchers on the off chance that you can state plainly what sort of employment title you're chasing and what sort of organization you need to be a section of. Please don't swear by saying, I can do pretty much anything. It's false â€" training doesn't rise to understanding and it makes you sound credulous about the activity market. Instead, in case you're a generalist or uncertain of where you'll fit in, center around your own characteristics and explicit skills. I am composed, and realize how to remain concentrated on errands. My exploration papers in school consistently got brilliant imprints for their careful truth finding and efficient structure. Think and discuss yourself regarding results. Individuals purchase arrangements, particularly while employing for a basic position. Be certain you've organized your profession (regardless of whether it's low maintenance employments) to accomplish results you can quantify. When composing your resume, remember loads of data for what you achieved while working. Did you smooth out processes? Make the most sales? Head up a group or get put accountable for a venture? Work on discussing your achievements to prepare for interviews. Follow this definite fire recipe for incredible meetings: State the or situation or task you looked at work; examine the move you made to tackle the issue (be explicit); and talk about the outcomes you achieved. Practice a couple of these examples of overcoming adversity until you're happy with letting them know succinctly. You'll require them for questions that start Educate me regarding a period at work you… Follow up altogether. In a serious activity showcase, your subsequent aptitudes can have a major effect. Part methodology and part normal politeness, great follow up can isolate you from the group and position you for a proposition for employment. To start with, follow up after applying. I know many employment searchers whose resumes presumably missed the cut, yet who got interviews dependent on their subsequent telephone abilities. Heres a tip: call recruiting administrators promptly toward the beginning of the day (7:00 8:00) or after 5:30 youll be bound to discover them in their office and ready to get the telephone. It might provoke the supervisor to search out your resume in the stack and investigate â€" multiplying your odds at getting a meeting. At that point, follow up after the interview. Position yourself as an example of genuine greatness by sending an individual note. Notice something you found out about the organization or detracted from the conversation, so the message appears to be new. Transcribed notes are uncommon enough that youll stand apart from the group, particularly if its elegantly composed and has something fascinating to state. 5 Signs that Your Resume is Behind The Times

5 Signs that Your Resume is Behind The Times Numerous clients, especially at the senior professional level, approach me for help because they have not updated their resume for many years. Recognizing that resume trends have drastically changed, they come seeking assistance to ensure they remain competitive in today’s tough job market. A smart move, because just as you update your fashion to keep up with current trends, you need to update your resume too. How can you tell if your resume is outdated and needs a professional makeover?   Five sure signs include: Your current resume has been typed up in a pre-designed template. If so, it probably looks like most of the resumes out there and this is doing nothing to help set you apart from your competitors.Sharon Graham, Canada’s Career Strategist, covers this topic in a  recent post,  stating: “Templates don’t account for strategy. You can’t effectively address obstacles in your history such as career gaps, career changes, or anomalies in your career path within the confines of a template”.You are unique so your resume should be too.  If you are not proficient  in strong resume content and design development seek assistance. Your resume wastes prime real estate. The top 1/3 of your resume is prime resume real estate, so dont  waste this space talking about what you want.  Listing an objective is an  old fashioned introduction that has not been used for several years. An objective adds no value and it is all about you; instead you want a clear title and strong profile at the very start of your resume, distinguishing what you have to offer prospective employers.Locate your  10% difference and clearly articulate how  you are prepared to apply your unique value to solve employers pain points.    Use your resume real estate wisely. Your resume reads like a career obituary. Snore.  If you have cut and paste job descriptions into your “Work Experience” section you are not selling value you are simply reiterating basic  work tasks.   Employers are not interested in what you were ‘responsible for’; they want to know what you can do for them!   Demonstrate your worth  through accomplishment-driven stories that are supported by numbers and metrics.  You must provide  proof  of the skills you claim to have expertise in. Dig deep and unearth some solid career achievements to help your resume shine. Your resume runs on and on.     This is probably due to lack of strategic direction and targeted content selection (related to points 1 and 3).   Today’s resume should never run longer than 3 pages, with 2 pages being the most common length. The average person will spend mere seconds scanning your resume initially (if you are lucky enough to get it read by an actual person, which you should aim to do!).  If your resume can not hook and engage with easily digestible bite-sized zingers, it runs the risk of losing the interest of the reader.  Select a resume strategy that works best for you and your work history.  Start by selecting the right format. The resume ends with the outdated line “References Available Upon Request”. It is assumed you will provide references upon request, at the interview, so save this space in the resume for something of greater benefit.  Do not date yourself by including this line.  A final extra tip! A good way to show that you are engaged with current trends and up-to-date with modern information sharing would be to showcase your social media addresses at the top of your resume â€" LinkedIn being the most common and critical (see why  here). If your resume needs updating and you are not sure how, seek help from a certified resume strategist, and then implement good career management by keeping it current and updating it regularly â€" your future self will surely thank you.

Keeping Up with the Changing Engagement Needs of Employees

Keeping Up with the Changing Engagement Needs of Employees National Employee Motivation Day is taking place this month (Thursday 25 February), so how can employers get an accurate idea of how motivated their employees are, and also gauge if existing engagement practices are still meeting the needs of a changing workforce? Running for the second year, the creation of a National Employee Motivation Day, run by Argos for Business, was prompted by a 2015 survey which showed that over half of the UK’s employees regularly felt demotivated at work. The aim of the day is to help businesses to understand the power of incentivising those who matter most, the staff. At Pure we champion employee engagement because we want to help businesses create and evolve workplace cultures which attract and retain the best people. We’ve just held our latest employee engagement seminar, which included over 100 local business leaders, and one of the key themes to come out of the event was the importance of understanding the changing needs of employees and establishing what really motivates people as individuals. This is because we are moving into an era where it is increasingly common to find four different generations of people working alongside each other. By 2025, the latest generation, known as ‘Millennials’ will make up 75 per cent of the UK’s workforce. However, numerous HR surveys have shown that traditional employee engagement methods are not always as effective when it comes to motivating this particular generation. How can employers keep up with changing trends, and be ready to evolve their workplace culture if needed? Annual staff survey There is still very much a place for the annual staff survey in helping to understand employee motivation levels and to identify any areas for improvement. This message was reinforced at our employee engagement event, when guest speaker Sharron Pommells, head of operations at Virgin Management, described the results of the Virgin staff surveys as being ‘as important as balance sheets’ when it comes to gathering information on employee engagement. To ensure good participation levels, and gain honest, valuable feedback it’s important to ensure that employees don’t find the survey too predictable or irrelevant to them. Employers should also make sure that the questions are specifically tailored to capture exactly what they want to establish, in line with the organisation’s business objectives. There is external support available to help businesses if needed. For example through our Best Employers Eastern Region initiative we offer local organisations a completely free employee survey which provides feedback on the company’s culture and values, the impact this has on engagement levels, and a tailored action plan for development. ‘Pulse’ surveys The annual staff survey provides an excellent overview, but we are now seeing a growing trend for using short, ‘pulse’ surveys throughout the year. At a time when the needs of a workforce are changing quickly, a year is a long time to wait for the next staff survey results to roll round. It can put employers on the back foot when it comes to spotting any changing trends which could impact on productivity. Pulse surveys are short and very specific, and provide a quick and effective way for employers to capture immediate feedback on particular issues. They work really well as just one question with multiple choice or score ranking answers. Discover individual motivations   While there have been many studies into the different working styles and preferences of different generations, sometimes generational stereotypes can be just that, a stereotype. Don’t assume that people from certain generations will all want the same thing. It’s important to understand what motivates people as individuals. Including some considered questions within an employee survey can be a good way to track and manage the varying needs within the organisation. Ask them what they want from their professional lives. What motivates them? How do they like to communicate? Discover where they are in their lives and what their needs are at the moment. Act on results However you decide to gather staff feedback, the most important thing is to make sure that you act upon the information you gather. The worst thing employers can do is to encourage staff to express their views and not follow them up. To build a company where people want to come to work every day, employees need to feel that they have not only have a say in the business, but also that their views are acted upon. Share key findings and trends from staff surveys and provide regular updates on actions which are being taken, linking them back to the original feedback given. This transparency will help employees to feel valued and enable them to see the role they are playing in shaping and improving the organisation.

How to Write a CV and Resume - Tips For Effective Job Writing

How to Write a CV and Resume - Tips For Effective Job WritingWhen you are looking for a job, the one thing that every employer looks for is your CV and resume. And the test is whether it makes you look like a bright person. A CV or resume looks at a more holistic view of a person. It gives an overview of your skills, experiences and so on.In fact, most people today would have a CV in their possession. This is because they would usually send it out to any and all companies for any kind of employment. But do you know that CV has grown so much? There are several points that you need to consider when writing a CV.The first thing that you need to do is to make sure that you capture the applicant's details correctly. This will also help you to write your own CV. It will show the employer that you have an eye for detail. Also, the CV should clearly state the candidate's education and qualifications. If you have made a mistake in this area, then you have to fix it before sending it out for c onsideration.A CV is not only limited to professional work history. Also, it includes any awards, achievements, and even personal achievements. Make sure that you include all these things in your CV.You may have heard that the employers are seeking a diverse range of candidates, and therefore you should sample the CV and resume of different companies before submitting it to them. This would give you an opportunity to hone and improve your CV. This is also a good way to make your CV unique.Do not be satisfied with a CV that consists of just one or two strong points. You have to include other things like the previous work experience and any specific skills. Thiswill also help you stand out from the crowd. And the CVs that contain these features will stand a greater chance of being chosen by the employer.Lastly, you need to include in your CV the reasons why you are applying for the job of a potential employer. The way that you use these can help you be selected as well. This is often where CV has grown. One last thing to remember is that the CV is something that you will always have in your hand. It is something that you can have a copy of and refer to it whenever you get stuck in between jobs.

How to Have the Best Valentines Day Ever

How to Have the Best Valentine’s Day Ever With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, married couples and singles alike are busy planning how they will spend the most romantic night of the year. Studies have shown that  50% of Americans celebrate Valentine’s Day, regardless of their relationship status. Whether you’ve been married for a while and are looking to spice up your love life or you are wondering if he is  going to pop the question  on February 14, here some ideas on how to make this Valentine’s Day one to remember. Get Out of Your Comfort Zone While a romantic candlelit dinner is a time-honored tradition on Valentine’s Day, often times it can be a bit archaic. If you share many meals with your honey, then a nice meal in a restaurant might feel like less of a treat and more of a chore.  Try cooking something new together instead. There are many resources online for cuisines that you might not have heard of, and the discovery of new ingredients will keep you both thinking about spicing things up long after the dishes are cleared. Try Something New in Bed There is a plethora of articles on the internet with tips and tricks on keeping your sex life interesting. Often including items such as roleplaying, bondage, and strawberries. But often just a simple change in routine can make things more exciting. Instead of sneaking off to bed at the end of the night, engage your partner in the morning, just after breakfast. A change in scenery and routine will allow you to make fun new memories. If you still need some help, ask to watch  while they engage with a toy. Just being watched can be enough to get their blood flowing. Go Big or Go… Home More often than not,  making time to simply enjoy each other  and their company is enough to make a perfect evening. Cleaning up the house before they get home from work is a sure fire way to impress them. Then, rent a silly movie and snuggle up on the couch, giving each other the space to laugh and make jokes. Spending quality time together is the best way to show your partner that you care. Try out a new board game, or read to each other from your favorite books. Building trust through intimacy will allow you to cherish each other and the ways that you better each other’s lives.

How to start something that scares you (and Im Twittering)

How to start something that scares you (and Im Twittering) I started using Twitter, after thinking about starting for at least six months. Its very scary to start something new and have no idea what Im doing. But I also know that all the excitement in my career has come from my willingness to try stuff that is scarybecause I dont know if I will be good at it and also because I dont know if it will pan out. So, here are five steps I took to overcome the scariness of trying something new. (And until I get Twitter onto my blog sidebar, here is where you can find my Twitter feed.) 1. Trust the buzz on whats worth a try. Many people in my life think Twitter is totally stupid. So for months and months, every time I said something out loud about how much I would like twittering, a cacophony of naysayers would send me in the other direction. Then Guy Kawasaki told me I should Twitter. And Laura Fitton. And I told them both that I was too busy and I thought they were too busy too. And they told me Twitter is an amazing way to connect with people and Id love it if I just tried it. They told me that nonstop, over dinner. And every time I tried to steer the conversation to our sex lives, they would steer it back to Twitter. After dinner, I went to twitter.alltop.com and started clicking on peoples feeds. To be honest, they all looked stupid. Even Guys. I didnt understand Twitter at all. But I knew that if Guy and Laura were both telling me Id like it, I needed to try it. 2. Dont hide the lame stuff. When I started blogging, I had no idea what I was doing, and Dennis Yang walked me through each first step. I asked things like, Can I list columns that I wrote before I started blogging? Dennis said, Yeah, that would be cool. I remember him saying those exact words, because I thought it was nuts. I didnt understand the rules of blogging and in print media, that would have been totally insane. But I did it. And then I spent a month trying to figure out what to blog about. I wrote very short pieces and I tried to be funny and clever. But gradually I started writing longer and trying less hard to be clever. And I found that when I was back to writing a regular column, just with a lot of links, I was writing my best. Being my true self was writing my best. Its so hard to find our true selves in a public forum, but really, thats what we do offline every day when we leave our house. 3. Get mentors. Social media changes peoples lives. So anyone who is blogging or twittering or uploading photos to flickr would be happy to help because that is what mentors do, they are enthusiastic to help you with what they love. I know this because I am so willing to help someone else start blogging, and I should not have been surprised when Laura (read her Ode to Twitter) spent a whole morning emailing back and forth with me about how to get started on Twitter. 4. Just start doing it. I was touched that Lauras final email to me that morning was so similar to the advice I give people who spend months emailing me questions about blogging: Enough. Just get started. You cannot learn about social media by talking about it. You have to do it. So heres the advice I give to you, and to myself when I worry that Im doing Twitter the wrong way: There are no mistakes. There are just ways that make good connections and ways that dont. Experiment to find the ways that do. And all time is well spent when you are searching for ways to express yourself and make connections. After all, what are we doing here, on earth, if not that? And in this respect, I love Twitter already.

Video How to Use Danas Career Law of Threes During Your Job Search

Video How to Use Danas Career Law of Threes During Your Job Search Hopefully, you have already learned about my Law of Threes as a major recommendation to help you through your job search. If not: In all of your written and verbal communications around your job search, and with every encounter, remember and utilize The Law of Threes. It will save you. So what is the law? Say three things and STOP. When talking, say three short things and STOP talking. Yes, three points then shut up. When writing, focus the cover letter, e-mail, follow-up letter or thank you note on three things. Then close. Now, here is how to utilize The Law of Threes during your specific steps of your job search For interviews, have your three points written down and well-rehearsed for the most commonly asked interview questions. Think in bullet points, not sentences. Even three key words will get you prepared. Example: What are your strengths? Well, Nancy, there are three that Id like to highlight today: First, I am detail-oriented. Second, I excel at managing others, directly or virtually and, three, I like to find creative solutions to problems. Then STOP talking! Smile. The interviewer will probe further if they want more information. They may ask you for examples of how you demonstrated these strengths. Do the same for weaknesses and all common interview questions. During network meetings, prepare three things you want to learn about and tell them up front that you have prepared three questions. Make each of the three things bite-size pieces such as Do you know anybody at these 3 companies? or What are three things I need to know before going in to interview with Boeing or Can I review my job goal with you and get your feedback? Cover letters with job applications: After the opening, say There are three key reasons why I believe I am a top candidate for your position. Then bullet points You are looking for a self-motivated, independent marketing assistant and I have three years in marketing communications for (company) and do not need training or supervision. The position requires a very high attention to detail and accuracy. My prior boss, who you can speak to, gave me the most important, detailed tasks since I proofed my analysis very well. Your company is launching three products in the next 6 months and I have worked on 5 product launches and am prepared for the challenge. Danas Career Law of Threes will help you when asking for a promotion, job-seeking within your company, describing your career goal and much more. They key is to practice it until it becomes (and stays) natural. It will help you personally and professionally. Best of luck!

You Are Home

You Are Home live from your heart, uploaded by Deb Did It, found via kind over matter March 29, 2010 Dear Michelle, Its your first day as a full-time entrepreneur! Well, technically its your 6th day, but since last week was Soul Week this is your first official day. Doesnt it feel warm? Doesnt it feel special? Doesnt it feel peaceful right? Cant you get a glimpse of what your life will be like from now on (hint: you call the shots plan your day around your values intentions!)? Youre already off to a great start, having showered, gotten dressed, enjoyed a cup of coffee a bowl of cereal some time with your Google Reader. Heck, you even returned some emails crossed some stuff off your To Do List but you eased into it slowly. And here it is, only 9:30a youre already honoring the Me Time you want to have in each work day. I know it still seems like youre on vacation. But isnt that telling a vacation to you is full of coaching work!? Thats how you know that this is It. This is For Real. This is Your Life, your career is wrapped tight within it. Its always felt like a separate entity work life. When have they cohabitated, ever? When you were performing, probably the summer stock, regional cruise ship gigs where you didnt have any other job but to get on stage a few times a week. Did that seem as seamless as this, though? If it did, I dont remember it well. Coaching, being your own boss, just seems to flow as a soulful, true part of your life, doesnt it? Its not even a piece or part of your life, because it doesnt feel like its a separate entity from life itself. Its really, really nice. Youre worrying about money, though. I can tell. However, is worry the right word? Youre not stressed or anxious about it, which is nice. Still, its there, looming, that one black cloud thats threatening to hide the sunshine thats invaded your world. You look at your client list , while as robust as it could have been with the day job, you now think, Its not enough. Youre allowing yourself to imagine that worst case scenario, which, thankfully, isnt too too terrible just another day job. Part-time, even. But acknowledging that Plan B calms you, makes you smile, lets you think, Thats it? Thats the worst case scenario? I could deal with that if I had to. Thats not failing. Thats coping, dealing with cards that I might be dealt in the best way I could possibly deal em. I could live through that, even be proud of it. Easy breezy. Youre going to be OK. No scratch that. Youre going to thrive. Because even if Plan B becomes Plan Right Now, youre still in the right place the place that honors your grown-up life all the goodness that comes with it. You got yourself there, I couldnt be more excited for you. You are home. Love, Future Michelle

How to Compete for an Out-of-Town Job

How to Compete for an Out-of-Town Job Three out of four hiring managers recently surveyed by Challenger Gray Christmas reported a shortage of local talent. So theo ret ically you could have better luck finding the job of your dreams if you’re willing and able to move. Problem is, many companies are hesitant to hire out-of-towners because of concerns over relocation, money, and local knowledge. But you can put hiring managers at ease by preemptively addressing these three issues in your application: How Willing You Are to Move Transparency is crucial. “If a recruiter in Pittsburgh sees you’ve been working in L.A. for 10 years, they’ll want to know why you’re applying,” says Marcelle Yeager, president of Career Valet, a professional coaching firm. Don’t skirt these issues or, worse, lie by using a local pal’s address. Instead, write beside your address that you would be eager to relocate to the area for the right career opportunity, recommends Jaime Klein, founder of Inspire Human Resources, a New York HR consulting firm. What It Will Cost the Company Hiring costs are top of mind for recruiters when evaluating long-distance applications. So pay your own way for an in-person interview if you can swing it, says Stefanie Wichansky, CEO at Randolph, N.J., management consulting and staffing firm Professional Resource Partners. A subtle approach: Indicate that you are frequently in the area and can make yourself available at the hiring manager’s convenience. Definitely don’t bring up needing relocation assistance in your cover letter. “That makes your candidacy less attractive, as you’ll be a more expensive hire compared to the local competition,” says Wichansky. Wait to raise the issue until the company has determined that you’re the best candidate. “You’re in a better position to negotiate once you’ve proven the value you can bring to the organization,” she says. How Well You Know the Area Unless you have a skill set that’s unique or in high demand, you’re going to need to convince a hiring manager that you’re not hamperedâ€"and wouldn’t hamper the companyâ€"by your lack of knowledge of the local market, says Yeager. One way to tap into the market from afar, besides following local news and blogs, is to join region-specific industry networking groups on LinkedIn. Start discussions to gain an insider’s perspective, then demonstrate this knowledge in your cover letter. An out-of-towner looking for work in commercial real estate, for example, might study neighborhoods and establish relationships with local developers to show he can hit the ground running.
